This work draws on the pictorial tradition of seascapes: historical paintings of this kind often refer to the social or political situations of the time. Here, the theme is the arrival of a boat carrying migrants: the wind known as the Grecale stirs the sea, the boat is still far away, the light and the rhythm of the waves are reassuring. The small, crowded boat is not the main focus; rather, it is the rocks in the foreground. The debris near the rocks marks the present. Without apparent drama, one world enters another, with the harsh conditions of those arriving confronted with another reality, characterised by the empty beach and the carousel of an old amusement park.
